Born in Erzurum in 1964, Şeref Naci Engin received his BA degree from Yildiz Technical University, Electrical Engineering Department in 1985. He was appointed as a Research Assistant in 1987 in the same department. He completed his military service as a Quality Control Engineer at MKE Institution for one year in 1989-1990 on behalf of the Ministry of National Defense. He attended one year of practical training in the field of Automatic Flight Control Systems in Spain in 1991-1992, as a researcher of the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries of Turkey. He did his PhD in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at University of Hertfordshire between 1994 and 1998, and his post-doctoral research in the System Dynamics and NN Research Group in Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University between 1999 and 2000 in England. In 2000, he started to work as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Yildiz Technical University.

He left the university in 2009 and worked as a Chief Researcher at TUBITAK Marmara Research Center, Energy Institute between 2009 and 2012. He was appointed as the General Manager for the Yildiz Technopark in 2012 and continued until the end of 2014. He is the founding director of the Technology Transfer Office of Yildiz Technopark. He returned to the University in 2014 and became a lecturer in the Control and Automation Engineering Department, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics at Yildiz Technical University. He has been the Head of the Department since May 2016.

Prof. Engin who has publications in the areas of system modeling, data analytics ad control theory is one of the co-founders of YEO Technology Energy and Industry Co. and one of the founding partners of Erik Technology Laboratories Co., a software development and consultancy startup company in Yildiz Technopark.

He is married with one son.
